The short answer: yes
An unopened Ozempic pen must be refrigerated at 2–8°C (36–46°F). After your first injection from a pen, Novo Nordisk’s prescribing information allows it to live at room temperature (up to 30°C / 86°F) or in the fridge, for up to 56 days — after which it should be discarded, used or not.
Ozempic storage at a glance
| Pen state | Where to keep it | For how long |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened (new) | Refrigerated, 2–8°C | Until the printed expiry date |
| After first use | Room temperature (below 30°C) or fridge | 56 days, then discard |
| Frozen — even once | — | Discard. Do not use a pen that has frozen, even thawed |
What actually ruins a pen
Semaglutide is a peptide, and three things degrade it:
Permanent — a frozen pen is done, even after it thaws.
Think parked cars, beach bags, checked luggage holds.
Keep the cap on and the pen in its carton.
A degraded pen looks exactly like a good one — there’s no colour change or warning, which is why the storage windows matter.
The part most people miss: unopened pens
The generous 56-day room-temperature window only applies after first use. The spare pens in your box are on the strict rule: 2–8°C, no exceptions. That’s what makes multi-week trips tricky — your in-use pen can ride in a toiletry bag, but next month’s supply needs a fridge or an actively cooled case. A battery-powered cooler like the Svalto™ Cooler Pro holds a set 2–8°C for 7–18 hours cordless with a live temperature display, which covers flights and travel days between fridges.
Unopened Ozempic lives in the highlighted band. The dot is where a warm day takes it — and where an active cooler brings it back.
Quick answers
I left my Ozempic out overnight — is it ruined?
An in-use pen: no, room temperature is within its rules. An unopened pen: one cool night indoors is generally inside the spirit of the label, but repeated or warm excursions burn its stability budget — see our guide to time out of the fridge, and ask your pharmacist.
Can it go through airport security?
Yes — pens and coolers go through the X-ray fine. Full rules in our TSA guide.
